After studying medicine in Berlin (1984-1989), Matthias Koepp trained as a Neurologist, first with Dieter Janz and Sibylle Ried (1989-1993) obtaining an MD degree from the FU Berlin, then with John Duncan in London (1993-1999), his longterm mentor, holding a PhD from the University of London. Matthias was appointed as Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology in 1999, and promoted to Professor of Neurology at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology in 2008.
In 2006, Matthias was invited to the AES-Investigator’s Workshop Organizing Committee (chair 2009-2012), and chaired the “Frontal Lobe SIG” (2008-2011) and “Neuroimaging SIG” (2012-2014). For his research and impact on the care of people with epilepsy, he received several international awards, including the AES Young Investigator Award (1997), Michael-Prize (2001), ILAE Ambassador for Epilepsy Award (2019) and the AES Clinical Science Research Award (2023).
Matthias directs a busy clinical practice in parallel with a research group focusing on predicting cognitive, mood and seizure outcome following both surgical and pharmaceutical interventions. Currently, he is PI on an anti-epileptogenesis trial in post-stroke epilepsy and leads a research programme into dementia in epilepsy. In his spare-time, he enjoys travelling with his family, is obsessed with rowing and trained as a disability ski-instructor
